Carl Stillitano

Carl Stillitano is an award winning, self-taught, prolific playwright who writes socially–relevant plays grappling with diverse contemporary issues.

With numerous theatrical productions mounted, three full-length feature films produced, and four screenplays optioned, Carl is known for multi-dimensional characters and rich dialogue within thought provoking material.

With very little formal education, Carl was schooled on the streets of Mt. Vernon, New York, blocks from the Bronx. As an American-born son of Italian Immigrants, English was his second language. In high school he was an accomplished athlete who was dismissed as a dumb jock and barely graduated. His childhood friends and teachers would be astonished at his literary achievements, but no one is more surprised than Carl himself.

Carl: “I was in a play before I ever saw a play.” It was a fateful encounter that opened the world of theater for him . At 6’4”, lean and muscular, with a commanding presence and soulful intensity – he was cast in a role written especially for him. Carl immediately sensed the transformative power and potential of the stage, for both the performer and the audience.

Then he saw his first play: “ I couldn’t believe two people talking on a roof could be so riveting … I said to my brother, Man, I wish I could spell I’d write a play ! He told me about spell check. I started writing at 8am the next morning, and never stopped since.” From complete naiveté Carl dedicated himself to intensive study. “ I fell in love with acting, I fell in love with writing, I fell in love with learning.”

As an Action Coach, Carl mentors and supports a new kind of emerging artist: “I teach independence and empower each individual to achieve their personal potential … creating leaders in the healing arts and entertainment community.” His work with today’s youth gives him insight into contemporary social issues that often inspires his writing.
