"When your heart opens, so do possibilities in your life"

The “More Than Acting” Class

An open level acting class, welcome to anyone. Class includes but is not limited to: Improvisation, Scene Study, Monologues and overall development of the Actor’s Instrument with a spirit of joy, expansion and positivity at it’s core.

“You don’t need to fit into it. It fits around you,” by meeting you where you are and helping you to move forward from there. Class brings you out of your head and into the moment, where you are able to be present in your own center – mind, body and soul. From this place, you are free to own your power and connect with others authentically. As artists and actors you will be given tools to grow a solid instrument that you understand, know intimately and can count on.

Each individual has their own journey and karma, as a human being and as an artist. This class caters to the unique needs, desires and goals of each of its students. This class is about THRIVING and living a balanced, healthy life in the arts and in all areas of life.

You come with an intention and you leave with a result, an insight, one more block in your foundation laid, an obstacle removed, a deeper awareness of yourself and your instrument, an experience in your body… simply put, you grow, step by step. And you have fun doing it. This is the course of the work. It plays out differently for everyone, but the intention of the class from the facilitator’s perspective remains always: TO SERVE THE HIGHEST GOOD OF EVERYONE PRESENT, IN EVERY CLASS, AS ARTISTS AND HUMAN BEINGS!

Since coming to Open Door Acting in 2009 I have grown tremendously as an actor and as a human being. I have learned to be more fully self-expressive in my life. Both teachers Carl Stillitano and Erin Flowers come from a place of true caring with their teaching approach. Both are 100% committed to the personal growth of their students.

My creativity as a writer has flourished as well. Since coming to Open Door Acting I have written a few plays and many vignettes inspired from the improvisations I have done with my fellow actors. This community has been a second family to me that I truly cherish. Thank you Carl and Erin for creating such a safe space for all of us.

– Robert O’Neill

“Going to Erin’s classes has been a gift. The classes are a lot of fun, the community is non-judgmental, accepting, supportive and encouraging of each other. It’s a chance to get out of my head, experience parts of myself that I might not ordinarily access, to communicate totally uncensored and to be comfortable with all kinds of feelings. I have found it to be a way to grow into a richer, more authentic person and the best part is that it’s totally fun!”

– Marina Maurino

“I have learned things about my innermost self; faced fears, challenged myself, lowered my defenses and opened my heart.”

– Michele Fox

“It has also helped me see how roles played in real life can be dropped cleanly just as they are in class. Switching roles, after going “to neutral” in class is akin to taking a pause before assuming a new role in my real life. And this is refreshing. The energy of the previous role doesn’t taint the expression of the role to follow.”

– Jim Barrett

“I came to the Open Door Acting company in 2009. At the time I struggled tremendously with self expression. At the open door I have learned to be more freely self expressive. The support I get from Erin and Carl is tremendous. My creativity and self expression have flourished since working with them. Both Erin and Carl’s level of honest caring cannot be denied. Both are very committed individuals to the growth of their students. When I came to the open door in 2009 I was in the middle of a painful breakup with my girlfriend at the time. Today I am celebrating three years of being in the best relationship of my life. I attribute this break thru with the growth I have enjoyed with the open door.

Since coming to the Open Door I have written a play largely based on some of the improvs I have done with my fellow actors. Their creativity has contributed greatly to the writing of the play. I love my fellow actors. I have seen tremendous growth with all of them. This community has been a second family to me that I cherish very much. I come twice weekly to class; it’s that important to me. Thank you Erin and Carl for your continued love and support!!!.”

“I first came to class to become more confident on stage. Open door acting company has not only helped me on stage, but off stage as well. I’ve become a better actor, a better friend, a better listener, a thriving professional. I have become so engaged where I can now tear up during a scene. I have learned that there are so many possibilities so many feelings to tap into to create an amazing performance. Erin and Carl are the most kind, compassionate and talented teachers that I have come across in NYC. They genuinely care about your growth and you as a person. Every class I walk out shocked and thrilled to have learned something so powerful and imperative to take me to the next level. This class fills me with a lasting sense of hope and possibility. I believe in my core that the things I learn and experience in the class will land me a role of a lifetime. But more importantly the entire school, company and community surrounding it, have become my family. I am truly grateful for all Open Door Acting is and brings to my life. Thank you Erin and Carl.”

“Having discovered this class through a friend’s suggestion nearly 2 years ago, I never thought it would have such a big impact on my life. The instruction and guidance I have received has taught me to think differently about myself, about other people, and about how I interact with the world. I have learned things about my innermost self; faced fears, challenged myself, lowered my defenses and opened my heart.

The participants in the class have become treasured friends, who support my growth as I support theirs. Never before have I met a group of people so committed to helping others be better versions of themselves, through the astute teachings of Erin and Carl. They are both very perceptive teachers who can pick up on an individual’s needs as well as limits. This allows participants to feel safe to go at their own speed, and have fun at the same time. Erin and Carl challenge the imagination, encouraging class members to stretch, while providing a loving and safe environment. A truly rare and unique class that I would recommend to anyone who wants to communicate better, listen more, love freely and have fun!”

– Michele Fox

I work with children on the Autism Spectrum. Initially, I took Erin’s class thinking that theatrical improvisation would be the best platform to refine my creativity skills. What I got out of the class in the last five years has been much more than I ever imagined. Not only did I expand my creativity skills exponentially, I have gained the ability to trust my intuition, work off my own impulses, learn what it’s like to feel relaxed yet fully centered and empowered…

There are endless praises that I can sing to the enormous contribution this class has made in my life and to my work. I have grown so much as a woman who is able to find self-love on stage and off stage, and be witnessed in it all by the warmest, least judgmental individuals in the world.

I highly recommend this acting class to people from all walks of life. Whether you are looking to have fun, connect with new and interesting people, perfect your acting skills or expand your self on a human level, Erin will tap into your highest potential and unleash what ever is wanting to express it self. Your job is to ‘Show Up’.
